Who was the first black quarter-back to win a Superbowl? That is a very interesting question and the response seems to depend greatly on who you ask. On Jan 31, 1988, Doug Williams led the 11-4 1987 NFC Champion Washington Redskins to a commanding 42-10 victory in Super Bowl XXII over the 10-4-1 AFC Champion Denver Broncos. Doug Williams became the first African-American to make it to the Superbowl and win. Not too long after Doug Williams, Russell Wilson made history becoming just the second African-American quarterback to win a Super Bowl as he led the Seattle Seahawks to a dominating 43-8 win over the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII.

On Sunday January 24, 2016, Cam Newton led the Carolina Panthers to a 49–15 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in the NFC Championship Game, sending his team to Super Bowl 50. Newton finished the game with high yardage, two touchdowns and one interception.  When Newton takes the field at Levi’s Stadium on Feb. 7, 2016 he’ll be looking to bring the Panthers their first championship. If he wins he will also become the third black quarterback to start in a Super Bowl and win.

Before African-Americans were accepted to be part of the NFL, they underwent harsh experience of being discriminated by the white NFL players. Before they knew it, they were slowly being accepted as part of the NFL until people started to notice a growing number of black quarterbacks in the NFL.
